The Piggly Wiggly project was fun to work on. There are a few key points that needed to be covered when designing the billboard. The billboard needed to help further establish the Piggly Wiggly brand identity, it needed to direct people to the grocery store, and needed to state “Lowest meat prices in Dothan”. The additional copy on the billboard was information the client wanted on the sign. When designing billboards it is very important to understand the amount of time someone will have to view the graphic, and how far away they will be when viewing it.
We added the extensions to the billboard to give it a little extra character and to bring more attention to “The Pig”. The Pig in the Piggly Wiggly logo is the focal point. Extensions carry the pig shape outside of the standard billboard frame extending it into space. Special frames have to be fabricated to hold the printed extensions. Many years ago while in high school my first paying job was at Piggly Wiggly stocking shelves and bagging groceries. In those days I would have never imagined drawing a billboard sign for Piggly Wiggly.
