I am sitting here at my desk tonight thinking of all the fun everyone is having on Means Dry Lakebed tonight in anticipation of tomorrow’s 2010 King of the Hammers race. So many people have called to ask if I am in Johnson Valley on the lakebed in the makeshift town called “Hammertown”. Hammertown is not an actual town it is a gathering of like minded individuals with a common goal. The goal at KOH is to have a good time either watching the race or for those prepared to get behind the wheel and let it all hang out in the worlds toughest one day race.
King of the Hammers for those who do not know is the ultimate in offroad racing. It takes some of the most difficult rock crawling trails in the world and combines them with harsh flat out desert racing. I have been involved with the offroad industry for many years. I have watched and participated in the evolution of this sport. I sit back in awe tonight as I read all of the comments on the internet about tomorrow’s 2010 King of the Hammers race wishing I would have made the trip out to the be more involved. Just think a class 1 desert buggy could not win KOH, but at the same time a cone dodging world class rock crawler could not win either. Someone in the middle is what a KOH style race vehicle is evolving to. It is truly awesome to see the birth of a new sport developing.
The actual race may be a one day event but I can tell you from a first hand point of view it is a year round endeavor. KOH is not something you wake up and decide to do a month before the race. It is something you have to live for and prepare for. The race concept started about 4 years ago as an idea discussed between Jeff Noel and Dave Cole. Today the KOH race is shaping the offroad industry. KOH is pushing fabricators to think outside of the box and reach for new ideas. KOH is also pushing people within rock sports to reach out to professionals in the desert racing community for their experience in the go fast department. As I typed the last sentence I can not help smiling. A desert racer with no experience rock crawling is going to have a difficult time on the technical rock sections which can eat up a car and destroy it before you know what happened. On the other hand KOH is not all rocks, the desert racers entered in this year’s event have more experience than any other past driver in the desert which can also destroy a car in the matter of minutes. So, the big question is who will win tomorrow’s 2010 King of the Hammers race? Will it be the ever popular and favorite to win Shannon Campbell, last years winner Jason Scherer, or a champion of desert racing like BJ Baldwin? Tomorrow morning the race will begin. The cars will line up and leave Hammertown two by two with a cheering crowd looking on from around the world.
I have to be completely honest here. Some have asked this week if I regret selling the shop and not going to KOH this year. My answer is absolutely not. I could have made the trip out to the lakebed this year but decided to give myself a break. I am back home in Alabama hanging out with my wife and kids. I missed Valentines day to be in the desert last year. This year I am going to take my wife out on the town to show her off for a change. Next year she may need a set of dirt bike goggles to keep the dust out of her eyes.
Good luck to everyone tomorrow. I hope the race goes well and everyone comes home safe.

Shannon Campbell, Jason Scherer, and Ben Napier are top three at 11:52 central time in the 2010 King of the Hammers race. The leader seems to change every few minutes. Rob MacCachren in the Blue Torch Fab car was in 4th place a few minutes ago.
I will post more updates later.
Shannon Campbell, Jason Scherer, and Ben Napier are still in the top three positions. Rob MacCachren in the Blue Torch Fab car dropped down to 40th place for a little while but has jumped back up to 35th place at 12 noon central time. Rob MacCachren in the Blue Torch Fab car has cleared check point 3.
Adam Woodlee is currently running in 34th position. Places can change rapidly in a race like King of the Hammer 2010. Watching the live coverage is pretty cool. Thanks Pirate4x4 for the awesome feed.
The leaders in King of the Hammers 2010 are through CP (check point 4) Top three are Jason Scherer, Eric Miller, and Matt Peterson. Shannon Campbell has fallen back to 5th place in his Monster Energy Drink number 5 car. Looks like Jason is bringing it again this year. Jason Scherer won last years KOH race.
Time now 12:09 central
Blue Torch Fab car is in the pits. From the pictures I have seen they appear to be working in a front drivers side brake line. Come on BTF you guys were going fast.
Rob Mac in the BTF car through main pit on live video feed. So they must be back up and running. King of the Hammers is the kind of race that will make the best in the business shine. Still a lot of racing left today.
Rob Mac in the Blue Torch Fab Car has climbed back up to 21st place. The live feed on Pirate4x4 has Rob Mac through CP 5 with an elapsed time of 1:22:30. Jason Scherer is leading the King of the Hammers at this point in car 76. Jason Scherer has cleared CP 8. Shannon Campbell has dropped to 5th place and has cleared CP 7.
There is a lot of racing left in the 2010 King of the Hammers. A lot can happen between now and the finish. I will keep watching the live coverage on Pirate and update here when I know more.

Jason Scherer is still leading. Brad Lovell has moved up to 5th place. Jason Scherer is the only driver showing through CP 9. Shannon Campbell has dropped to 11th place. Shannon is showing CP 7 on the leader board.
Pirate4x4 is reporting Rick Mooneyham leading the 2010 King of the Hammers at this time and showing him past CP 11. Jason Scherer has slipped to 2nd and showing through CP 9. Brad Lovell has moved up to 3rd position through CP8. A lot of very good racers are still in the hunt. Shannon Campbell is still showing 111th place at this time through CP 8
As I hit submit on the last comment the leader board updated. Jason Scherer is in the lead through CP 12. Rick Mooneyham is in 2nd place. Keep in mind King of the Hammers is being ran in the middle of the desert. All of the information I am getting is coming through a satellite feed.
In the latest update Shannon Campbell has dropped to 14th position. Time now 1:48 central time.
Just read reports that Dean rolled at 80 mph plus but is OK. I will post more when I find out.
Reports are Adam Woodlee cracked the front diff housing, but plans to run until it fails.
Matt Messer lost the turbo and is heading back to pit at race mile (RM) 59
Reports are Shannon Campbell is OUT. Transmission problems. I will update when I find out more. If so that is two years in a row that took a tranny took Shannon Campbell out of the King of the Hammers
Adam Woodlee is showing 23rd position at CP 8.
Shannon is calling for a new tranny in the pit. Never count Shannon out… till the end.
EZ Rick in 554 is the current leader. The end of the race is getting close.
Reports are DEAN the ICEMAN is still in the race. Thats awesome.
Just checked back in on the King of the Hammers race action. Brad Lovell is in the lead on the Pirate4x4 leader board at this time through CP 16. Jason Scherer is posted in 2nd through CP 16 as well.
Dean “The Iceman” Bulloch is posted in 20th. I have not seen a clear report about the reported roll over earlier.
Looks like Brad Lovell is back in the lead again. Loren Healey is currently in second with Derek West following in 3rd. All three have passed CP 19.
My friend Nicole Johnson seems to be coming up the ranks. She is currently in 18th position. She has been in the last three King of the Hammers events. She is driving for Ballistic Fabrication this year.
Pirate4x4 just updated the Leaders Board. The top three are now. Derek West in first followed by EZ Rick in 2nd and then Brad Lovell in 3rd.

The official winner of the 2010 King of the Hammers is Loren Healey. Brad Lovell lost by 28sec!!!! That was a close finish. I would have never thought the race would be decided by 28 seconds.
THANKS to Lance, Camo, and the rest of the Pirate4x4 for the live feed all day today. Just think another year of getting ready for KOH is ahead of us.
Congrats to Loren Healey the 2010 “King” of the Hammers.
There are still a lot of rigs out on course. I will update later tonight. Time to head out to dinner with the family.
