Windmills driving your business forward

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

I went to the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens this afternoon with my wife and children to take pictures for the family Christmas cards.  As were were walking around the Botanical Gardens I noticed the windmill pictured below.  The old windmill caught my attention. With no on in sight to operate the windmill it stood there spinning in the wind.  It continued to operate the water pump attached at the base.  The old company branding on the windmill also made me think.  If you do not have advertising up at all times how can you expect to gain new customers.  You have to put the right advertising up and in a way which demands attention.  Advertising is a tool that will work for you even when you sleep.

Windmills are impressive structures which draw attention from both young and old.  They stand firm over surrounding objects ready to do what they were designed to do.  By design windmills were meant to convert wind into a more useful energy source.  The windmill design may have changed  over the centuries, but they still take an energy source with little value to produce a product with value. Advertising can be worth more than the paper it is printed on if used correctly.  Maybe the following ramble will make you think.

If you think about some of the common things a windmill has to offer and how it might relate to business you may be surprised.  I know some of you reading might think this comparison is simple or wonder why I am even posting this.  The reason for this post is to make you think about the fundamentals of business and how you need to stand prepared.

  • What is a windmill?  A windmill can be traced back to ancient Tibet and China during the 4th B.C., and all throughout the history of the windmill it has been meant to convert wind energy to rotational energy.  Once converted Humans have found innovative ways to use the energy to lessen and make human labor more efficient.  If you would like to make a windmill comparison to your business model you can certainly do so.  In business we build methods to make business more efficient and stand ready to answer the call of our customers.  A windmill’s blades are called sails.  In the case of a business sails can be viewed as advertising.  Without advertising or some way to pull customers in to spend money your business can not convert employee labor to profit.  As a business owner you must have your sails up at all times prepared to pull in new customers.  A business with no sails up will have a difficult time gaining momentum and market share.
  • By design many windmills have the ability to turn and face the wind for maximum efficiency.  In business it is imperative to have the ability to adjust your sails (advertising) for the best possible return on investment.  Advertising can be expensive and you must use it correctly if you plan to grow your business.  You must make sure your advertising campaign has direction and the ability to adjust with the market place and outside trends.  Is your windmill ready to change with the flow of business if needed? Marketing Tip #1, Be Prepared to Tell What You Do

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

I went into the grocery store the other day.  I was standing in line and the person behind me read my shirt and then asked what my business does.  I very quickly replied, “My business is to build businesses through solid marketing materials such as print media, vehicle graphics, signs, and websites”.  I then closed my mouth to wait for a question because I knew they would have one.  The point here is I knew what to say in a quick effective manner and shut my mouth.  If you reply to someone with a long statement you will loose them in the conversation.  Give the statement and then shut your mouth.  Do not do all of the talking.  People love to hear their own voices in a conversation.

I always recommend to clients to practice saying what their company offers so when the situation comes up they have confident response to engage conversation.  If you are engaging you are more likely to convert this person into a customer.  I would recommend roll playing with a friend or spouse to make sure you know what to say, but more importantly how to say it effectively with confidence.  It may seem trivial but what you say and how you say it does matter.

I am going to end this Be Prepared statement with ALWAYS have your business card on hand no matter where you are going.  You never know when the next big customer is going to be found. When possible always ask for the potential customers information during the exchange.

Be sure to check back soon for updates to the 509 Media Marketing Tips Section.  Thank you for reading.

PRI Magazine Ad for JMR

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

jmr_ad_3rdJMR Manufacturing of Creston, California is in the business of building high quality American made fabrication Tools.  Be sure to check out JMR if you are in the market for a tube bender, tube notcher, belt sander, fabrication table, and so on.

The JMR ad is a black and white 1/3 page vertical ad.  It will be running in the PRI Magazine’s Fabrication Issue.  If you do not know what PRI is you might like to know it is the Performance Racing Industry.  PRI hosts the mega race trade show in Orlando, Florida each year.  If you are into racing, cool tools, and parts PRI should be on your list of places to visit.

The JMR ad layout was simple and to the point.  The requirements for the ad stated the ad had to be black and white.  After a few mock ups it was decided to stay with the bold contrast of the solid black on white.  509 Media is in the business of building businesses.  Give 509 Media a call for details on ad layout.

509 Media Storefront Window Perf

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

dsc_9135It has been a couple weeks since making a blog post here on 509 Media.  We have been very busy keeping up with our work load and moving into the new location.  We wrapped the 509 Media storefront today with perforated vinyl.

Perforated vinyl or more commonly known as window perf can be a very effective tool advertising your business.  The traffic count in front of our business is roughly 20,000 cars per day.  When compared to other local advertising methods window perf can deliver customers to your cash register for a small investment.  Window perf is vinyl with little holes in it.  The holes allow people inside the building to see out as if there are no graphics on the window.  The window perf on the 509 Media store front is a 50/50 ratio.  This means the area you can see through is equal to the area printed on.  50/50 window perf allows you to see out of the building much easier than 70/30.  On 70/30 the print covers 70% of the window and the holes cover 30%. One benefit of 70/30 is the ability to have more detailed prints.

The design on window perf can include what ever you want to promote your business.  You can have pictures of your product, or a graphic to grab attention.  Here at 509 Media we wanted something that would stand out as people drive by our door everyday.

Contour Cut Vinyl Stickers for Offroad Film Company

Contour Cut Stickers

Contour cut stickers are more professional looking than a square box or oval cut around your company logo.  A contour cut follows the edge of your logo or design to ensure a clean looking peel and stick stickerBusted Knuckle Films wanted 509 Media to print and contour cut stickers to pass out to fans at off-roading events they attend filming for their DVD series. The result is a clean looking full color vinyl sticker which can easily be applied to a vehicle, toolbox, or what ever you want to place it on.

The dark background texture will not be part of the sticker.  If I placed the white bordered sticker on a white background the contour cut would not show up on your screen.  I will add some pictures of the actual stickers soon.

509 Media offers a wide range of digital printing.  Be sure to CONTACT us to help with your marketing efforts.

Contour Cut Full Color Stickers for Country Crossings

Friday, January 8th, 2010

dsc_8133I got a call from a Dothan area sign shop to print 10 inch round Country Crossing Stickers a few days before the troubles began or them with this week’s shut down “due to safety” reason.  I guess Country Crossing was attempting to have their valet parking signs in place before the law enforcement raid.  If you have not heard the story about Country Crossing be sure to check out Rick Stokes News for more details.  Country Crossings is back open for business.  Be sure to visit their website.

Anyway back to the important issue at hand.  Printed, laminated, and contour cut stickers.  The stickers were printed on our 64″ Mutoh Toucan LT with wave technology.  The vinyl used on the full color stickers for this project was 3M CV3.  The vinyl is expensive to make a simple sticker but the signs Country Crossing needed to use them will be left outside.

If you have no clue what a contour cut is I will explain.  It is a vector path placed around the outside shape of the graphic thus cutting the image out. A vector path in simple terms is a line drawn the computer to let them plotter know where to cut the stickers out..  The more curves in a design the more difficult it can become to create the contour cut.  There is not a lot special about the Country Crossing stickers.  I though I would share for those interested in reading.

Please note 509 Media is NOT the grapgic designer for the Country Crossing logo design.

Website Designer and Increasing Your Speed of Business

Monday, January 4th, 2010

speedofbusiness509509 Media offers web design services to people around the world.  Business owners in Dothan, AL and other small town USA towns should understand the upcoming decade will hold many changes in the way local and regional businesses advertise their products and/or services. Even for small local businesses in towns just like Dothan the first line of contact may be your website.  More and more people are turning to advances in technology to look up telephone numbers, to determine business hours for a store they want to visit, and to look for a local supplier of a certain item.  The internet increases the Speed of Business not only for the consumer but for the business owner as well.  As the Speed of Business increases in speed it is paramount that you stay at the leading edge of your competition.

You may be asking, “What do you mean by the Speed of Business will increase?’ By saying the Speed of Business is increasing and will continue to do so in the upcoming decade is a simple idea.  More and more people are purchasing “Smart Phones” like the new Verizon Droid or the extremely popular Apple iPhone.  A smart phone increases speed of business in a few different ways.  The first thing many business owners in Dothan and other small towns should realize is you should make your business easy to do business with.  People are searching for products and services with smart phones on the internet and the easier your company can be found the more likely you will gain a sale.  If your company does not have an up to date website you could be missing out on increased sales due to increasing Speed of Business.

Speed of Business can manifest itself in other forms.  More and more consumer confidence is rising in regard to making online purchases.  By purchasing online it can save the consumer time and money by not going to the physical location of the business.  Speed of Business here is effected in that people never have to talk to you, they never have to step foot on your place of business.  All the customer has to do is enter some basic information on the internet to order a product.  An online store might not be a perfect fit of some companies, but for many it can open a new revenue stream.  509 Media offers e-commerce solutions to help you sell product online.  We will be happy to educate you on everything needed to begin selling product online.

The last area concerning Speed of Business I would like to cover in this short post has to do with information.  Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace have helped change website design.  In years past a website was a few pages describing your company, products, and services.  The website design was placed on the net and left to direct customers to for additional information.  Well if this is the approach you still have today for your website design you are going to be left behind by other more aggressive businesses.  Today website design is about current up to date information.  A website needs to be updated on a regular basis with new information encouraging visitors to come back and read more.  Older websites (Legacy Websites) are becoming antiquated.  Legacy sites are being replaced by Dynamic Websites which are easy to add and remove information .  Often times the business owner can add information to their website with out the need of a web designer thus saving them money and time.  An example of things to update your website might be the following:  Your company just received a new product.  You should take a couple pictures and have it posted to your website.  With a dynamic website this process could be completed in 5 minutes.

Here is how all of this ties together in a working package.  A potential client turns on their laptop while sitting in front of the tv.  The potential client sees an item on tv they are interested in so they perform a quick search on the net for the item in their local town.  For conversation sake lets say it is my home town Dothan.  The potential client finds a search result of the product you just posted to your website a couple days earlier so they visit your website.  After a couple minutes the potential client decides to order online to make sure they do not miss out on the new item before it sells out.  The potential client opts for a local store pickup when checking out on your website.  The credit card is ran and the order is placed.  The following day you have the order processed and waiting for the potential client to pick up.  When this customer walks into your store for the first time to pick up their item they notice a few other things they can not live without because you have taken the time to optimize floor space in your store to up sale.  Of course if you are shipping the product to the customer you want to make sure you have the website set up for cross selling items to gain the up sale.

Not only does an up to date website open the door to creating sales online it also increases the chance you will be found when a potential client searches the internet.  Google and other search engines index content from your website.  The more information or content you have posted to your website the more the search engines have to crawl and index.  Information is king in the internet world.  It is very easy to maintain a website with up to date information. Is your company and website ready as the Speed Of Business increases?  Do you need a web designer who understands advertising and converting visitors to sales.  After all no business invests money on advertising just to say they have an ad.  You should make sure your website is an asset doing work for you and not just sitting there.

I hope you found this short post interesting.  Please leave a comment below.  I will be adding more informational post on web design, digital printing, advertising, vehicle wraps, and more.  Be sure to check back to 509 Media.
