Dothan Police Department Bomb Squad

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Dothan Police Bomb SquadI got a call from a friend on the Dothan Police Department Bomb Squad a couple weeks ago.  He asked if I had time to design a personal business card he could take to a 6 week long training exercise.  I told him I would make time if I could get a couple get out of jail free cards and 5 or 6 look the other way when I am going to fast in the car.  He laughed and said he could not help me there.  LOL  It does not hurt to ask.  Anyway the card is to exchange with others attending the training exercise from around the country.

He emailed over the necessary info to be placed on the card, and a really rough picture of the EOD Crab.  Umm yeah the pic he sent over sucked so I made a new one.  I used a 3d image of a bomb for the EOD Crab.  In order to get the weathered effect on the card I used a photo copy paper.  I copied 5 pieces of paper with the lid open and no original on the glass.  The result is black paper.  I think made one for the folds you see in the card and then a couple with stains, and one with scratches.   I then used these black scratched up pieces of paper in Photoshop to create the effect.  Basically by creating an Alpha Channel I selected the needed features and created a mask for the businesses card.  I may write a tutorial if anyone is interested in learning how to do this effect.  I did not use brushes to do the worn effect.

The cards are going to be printed full color front and back.  I think I am going to leave the UV

If you need a custom business card be sure to contact me.

The rush to get Joey the business cards or trading cards is over.  He left for training with them last weekend.  The cards seem to be a big hit with others he has given them to.  This card is one of my personal favorites so far.  I took some pictures of the finished product before handing the business cards over.  Check it out and be sure to post a comment below.

Free Fonts

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

I am making this Free Fonts post for a couple reasons.  The first reason I am posting places to look is to help my clients decide what style fonts they like or dislike.  By visiting a Free Fonts website they can pick out what they like and email a link to the free font to me.  When doing graphic design for clients I often never meet with face to face this can help reduce the time needed to complete a project.  When time is reduced on a graphic design project the overall cost can also be reduced. The other reason I am making this post is because I have people asking me all the time where they can find free fonts.  There you have it.  If you are a graphic designer, someone trying to design on their computer, or whatever, free fonts are always nice to find.

I am going to start this post with two of the places I visit when looking for fonts.  There are a myriad of places on the net for free fonts but I think you will find the following helpful.

The first place I go to is DaFont.com.  Dafont hosts a great collection of free fonts.  Their navigation makes it very simple to browse the various fonts on their website.

The second place I visit for free fonts is Acid Fonts.  Acid Fonts hosts many free fonts and paid fonts as well.  You can sit there for hours looking through all of the free fonts.  So grab a cold drink and start browsing.

If you have a great place to find free fonts be sure to post a comment below.  Or if you found this post helpful please post a comment below.  You do not have to create an account to post a comment.  Thanks for visiting 509 Media.

Choosing a Graphic Design Company in Dothan, Alabama

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Dothan, Alabama is like many other cities with sign shops popping up on every corner.  Some of these companies seem to think by simply purchasing a vinyl plotter and software they are a master graphic artist.  I am no Michelangelo painting a masterpiece, but I have learned a few things over the years to help ensure my clients a positive ROI (Return On Investment). While driving around Dothan looking at signs and vehicle lettering some of these companies are turning out I wonder how they benefit the companies advertising plan.  It is sad for the companies who paid for some of these signs and the negative impact it can have on their bottom line.

I saw a lawn care company’s enclosed trailer the other day while pumping gas.  The lawn care trailer was sitting across the small gas station parking lot.  The graphic design was very difficult to read on the side of the trailer.  The graphics looked like a big blob slapped on the side of the trailer.  It was not doing the job for the lawn care company.  Grant it the lawn care company owner most likely requested the vinyl letters to be red with a black outline as his truck is red not knowing this color combination is hard to discern.  It is our job as a graphic artist to advise the client on what colors will work, and guide them to a solution that will provide positive results.  Red letters with a black outline almost always yields a negative result because it is very difficult to discern.  I went over to talk to the lawn care company about their graphics.  They agreed it was very difficult to read and said they would like to talk after the holidays about wrapping the trailer with a more effective message.

When designing signage for road signs, vehicles, trailers, and so on it is important to understand what works for the use of the graphic design.  Factors like viewing distance come into play.  How fast are people passing the sign is a very important question to answer before designing the graphic.  Whats the point of putting a book on your sign when people can not read it as they pass by?  Most people will turn away from signs with more than 6 words.

Another thing I noticed is kerning problems with some of the signs and graphic designs around Dothan.  Kerning is the spacing between the letters on your sign.  The longer the viewing distance the wider the kerning needs to be.  For instance, on a billboard sign kerning would be spaced out to make the sign easier to read as a car travels by the sign at 55 mph.  When designing website graphics we may tighten up the kerning a little to maximize space on the website.  The difference is a computer monitor is 2 feet from your eyes and a billboard can be much more than 200 yards away from you.

The point I am making is you should seek out a sign company and/or graphic design company who understands how to build an effective advertisement.  I am not saying all sign shops and graphic designers in the area have these problems.  You should inspect previous work of a company you are considering working with.  After all it is your business and in many way you are putting your company in the hands of the person generating your advertisements.  Do you want to work with someone with experience in marketing? If so be sure to Contact 509 Media.  If you would like to sit down and talk about how 509 Media can benefit your company be sure to Contact 509 to set up a meeting.

Southern Shenanigans DVD Artwork

Monday, December 14th, 2009

sample1-mail

Busted Knuckle Films contacted 509 Media to layout the graphic design for their Southern Shenanigans DVD which was released this month just in time for Christmas.  I had a friend Jeremy help on this project due to the time frame and the current work load we have.  Jeremy did a great job on this project allowing us to close the project before the deadline.

dvd_face-printThe DVD insert and DVD insert were designed using Adobe Photoshop.  Once we got into the project we noticed the logo Busted Knuckle Films was used by another company.  After a quick discussion we contacted BK Films to let them know about the issue.  Jeremy reworked the logo design to loose the clip art fist used on the original logo design.  The end result is a more realistic looking fist on the logo.

509 Media is not involved in the filming, production, editing, or distribution of the DVD.  If you need DVD artwork and / or DVD duplications made be sure to contact 509 Media.

Website Design for RC Fun Hobbies

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

rc-fun-hobbies-website

RC Fun Hobbies in the Dothan, Alabama area was in need of some help with their WordPress site.  509 Media was there to answer the call.  WordPress is a very effective platform to build a website from.  While WordPress is a free source code to build a website from you will need to modify the code to make it look the way you want.  Many people think WordPress is only used for blogs about a given subject.  The notion is far from what can be accomplished with a well designed WordPress website.

The owner of RC Fun Hobbies wanted an easy to change website he and his staff could add or remove information as needed.  WordPress is very easy to add new content and edit the information. In today’s internet environment new up to date information is very important.  WordPress, with a little help, is very effective with SEO or Search Engine Optimization.  Too often people get caught up on how their website looks forgetting the major search engines can not index nice pretty pictures.  Being found on the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo is all about content.  Content is typed information.  Being found can increase your chances of making the sale and depositing the results into your bank account.

WordPress is the answer to many of the needs RC Fun Hobbies has now and in the foreseeable future.  RC Fun can add up to date track conditions, information about new products in the store, and coverage of special events at their multiple track facility.

509 Media works with clients around the world for graphic design and web design.  If your company is in need of a custom website or a custom WordPress theme be sure to contact us for a quote.

We are not finished with the RC Fun Hobbies website.  We will be adding more to their website over the next few days and reworking some of the pages they created earlier.  We are also adding a CRE Loaded e-commerce platform to the site as well.

Do It Right Lawn Care Website

Friday, December 4th, 2009

509 Media has been working hard to help Do It Right Lawn Care set them self apart from the myriad of other lawn care companies in the area. Do It Right Lawn Care has been around for years serving people in the Dothan, AL area. One of the goals in wrapping their truck, building a new website, and re imaging other parts of their marketing campaign was to let people know they are serious about their business.  Do It Right Lawn Care wanted to let their client base know they are dealing with a professional lawn care company.

We choose WordPress as the platform for this site because of it’s ease of use on the back end for the client. If you can type a letter in MS Word you can make posts on a WordPress site. It operates with a WYSIWYG set up. What this means to the client is adding / editing a new post or page is easy because what you type and how you see it will be how it displays on the website. It is also very easy for the client to add video and pictures to this style of website.

Check out Do It Right Lawn Care‘s NEW home on the web.

IH8mud.com and Rockcrawler.com Business Cards

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Some of you many know Woody from IH8MUD.com which a forum focused on Toyota FJ40′s.  Woody recently bought RockCrawler.Com, a news based site, from Mike of 4x4RockShop.  Woody has some great plans for Rockcrawler.com.  I have always felt the site had a lot of potential with rock crawling gaining so much popularity around the world.

Woody saw some of the business cards 509 Media has been knocking out and wanted some for his companies.  After a couple emails 509 Media executed a plan for a new business card.  The design idea was to make the card look scratched up and worn.  We are not going to add UV coating to these cards.  We are going for the matte finish to add to the old and worn look.  On the back side of the card we kept a “write box” so notes can be written if needed.
