Your New Website… Now What?

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

It does not matter if 509 Media has designed a new website for your or another company you need to make an active effort to promote your website..  One of the differences 509 Media offers is we educate our clients on what to do with their website after the new website goes live.  To the average person SEO (Search Engine Optimization) sounds like some type of computer web nerd voodoo magic.  Simply put yes there are things that your website designer needs to do to your website when laying out the design to provide the best possible chance of being found.  The design process should incorporate measures to maximize the ability to be indexed by search engines.  Google is and will remain the big kid search engine on the block.  Others like Yahoo, Bing, Ask, and so on need to be addressed as well.  OK, I know you are asking what you can do from your office or home to maximize the chances to have your website found on search engines.

Following are some simple things to do to help SEO of your website.  You should read and educate yourself on these topics but this overview will shed a little insight on the mysterious thing called SEO. Please keep in mind there are MANY more things to consider when discussing SEO.  This list contains things the average person can do with very little effort.

What can you do to help your website be found on the internet? 10 Things you can do to help your website:

  1. Make sure you have relevant content on your website.  I know this is something some website designers will be responsible for, but as the owner of a website you should know to post keyword rich relevant content.  If you have a website built in the form of a content management system you may need to log in and start typing.  Here at 509 Media we design many websites based on WordPress.  WordPress allows the client (site owner) to constantly add content to their website without the need to contact a website designer.  Make sure you are adding content with keywords to drive search engine traffic to your website.  Keywords are specific to your business or service.  In other words on this website keywords include things like, graphic designer, website designer, stickers, banners, and Dothan.  I included Dothan because it is the city in Alabama where 509 Media is located.
  2. Google Page Rank is Google’s means to measure other websites back linking to your website.  Google Page Rank is measured from 0 through 10.  10 is the highest.  Do not be upset if your website does not have a really high page rank.  Facebook is the number 2 most visited website on the net at the time of writing this post.  Facebook has a Google Page Rank 9.  Currently 509 Media has a Google Page Rank 3.  Everyday we look for places to gain back links to 509 Media to improve page rank.  Back links are not only important for page rank but they can also produce traffic from people clicking the links you have on other websites.  Some websites including forums have a little piece of code built into their websites called No Follow or Do Follow.  A No Follow site basically tells spiders from Google and other search engines to not follow the link.  If this is the case you do not get credit for the link. So make sure you are finding Do Follow websites to have your link added. If you would like to read more about Google Page Rank be sure to visit our Page Rank Page here on 509media.com. Comment Below if you would like to know how to tell is a website is a Do Follow site.
  3. The following adds to the above step.  Backlinks are important to get, and should be taken serious by those wanting to build web traffic.  Your new website needs to get as many of them as possible.  Step three is get your website listed on website directories.  Directories are websites like DMOZ and Technorati.  There are many of these directories out there to get your website listed on.  When looking for website directories be sure to look for ones with high Google Page Ranks.  In order to get your page rank going vertical you need to have back links from higher page rank websites. I should mention not all directories are free.  If you would like to learn more about directories be sure to leave a comment below.
  4. Assuming the content you are adding to your website has something to do with your products and/or services it will benefit you to become active on the various social media websites.  Sure when you think of Facebook or Myspace you think of a pimple face teenager kids, but the fact is there are more people on these websites than can be ignored.  Social Media is a great place to interact with your clients and future clients.  It shows that you are a real human and willing to interact and answer questions.  I think one of the biggest things is you will also be in front of people to handle issues if something should go wrong after a purchase is made from your company.  In short it adds a human element to your online presence.  Twitter is another good place to become active.  Every time we post something to Twitter we get people clicking the links and visiting our website.  Social Media is a strong advertising tool and should not be ignored.  After all it is free to use.
  5. Online Forums are just as important as the popular social media websites.  Forums are online communities of like minded people.  Online forums cover topics of everything imaginable.  From sports forums to home improvement forums you can find many to drive traffic back to your website.  In some ways they are social media websites.  I did not mention them in the social media section above because they need to be viewed differently than social media websites.  Online forums can cost money to advertise on.  Depending on the number of people visiting the forum it may generate some revenue for your company.  If you decide to start posting on forums I recommend you getting involved in conversations and offer valuable content to the forum.  Do not be a salesman and spam the forum.  If you see people asking questions about a subject you are educated in be sure to answer the question and let the person know to ask you if they need to know more.  Offer a helping hand, and spend enough time on the forum to learn the ways of doing business on the forum. Each forum is different and the people react differently.  The last thing you want to be known for is a spammer.  Take your time.  Read the forum rules before posting.  If you would like to know more about forums and the proper way to use them for advertising be sure to post a comment below.
  6. Posting on Craigslist.com can be a good thing if done correctly.  I have been posting on Craigslist for a while now.  I have seen some positive results from the effort.  If you decide to post on Craigslist be ready for the endless scam emails.  With a little effort and common sense you can weed through scam emails.  I would recommend using it to advertise locally and direct people into your store or provide a telephone number for people to call.  If you decide to use Craigslist make sure to stick with it for a couple months before deciding if it is generating results.
  7. Post ads on eBay to advertise your products.  eBay rules state that you can not back link to your website if the item is posted for sale on your website.  You can add a back link on eBay if you are linking for additional information.  Learn the rules on eBay and how you can bend them to your benefit.  Don’t break the rules just learn how to use the rules to your benefit.  I view eBay as a source to advertise my product and to get the word out about what I have to offer.  This means of advertising is useful if you have a niche market item.  If you have a mainstream item that many people are offering eBay may not be a cheap place for you to advertise.  If you try this means of advertising you may find more people are calling you to order rather than using the eBay listing.  Ask people where they heard about you to measure if you are being effective with your eBay listing.  The other view of eBay is to actually look at it to sell your item. Many people look to eBay when looking for deal so be ready to sell your item at a bargain price.  Due diligence will determine your sale price so make sure to do your homework.
  8. Post pictures on Flicker and use them on your website.  When posting pictures on Flicker make sure to add the proper information with each picture.  If you post up pictures with just the number your digital camera attached to them you are selling yourself short.  Google and other search engines will only index the pictures by the information you list with the image.  Having proper picture titles and meta descriptions will help your pictures rank better in search engine results.  In order to have a large number of pictures on Flicker you will have to pay for the service.
  9. Video is a powerful thing.  Look at how large You Tube has grown over the years.  Posting product description videos on You Tube can offer another way for your product and/or services to be indexed and found.  We can suggest many different things to post on You Tube, but I think you can use your imagination.  Develop video for “How To” do things related to your products.  Do not stop with You Tube.  You can also use online video websites like Vimeo.  Vimeo allows you to put higher quality and longer videos.
  10. Anytime you add new content to your website, Flicker, You Tube, or other source be sure to post it up on the forums you are posting in, on social media websites, and certainly talk about the new content on your website.  After all the point of all of this is to drive traffic back to your website.  If you are not getting found on the net it will be difficult to convert the website investment into deposits at the bank.

The 10 Things To Do After Going Live with your new website are some of the things you need to do.  There are more things you can do to better your chances of being found.  You can spend money on things like Adwords, but I wanted to keep the subject matter related to things that are free to do or minimal cost.  I will be posting an article on Google Adwords soon.

Be sure to comment if you have questions.

WordPress Themed For Busted Knuckle Films

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

bkfsiteBusted Knuckle Films is an up and coming video company based in Auburn, Alabama.  Busted Knuckle Films (BKF) needed a new website to better market their videos and apparel merchandise so they contacted the crew here at 509 Media.  We suggested using WordPress as the platform to build their website from.  We choose this direction for a couple reasons.  One of the main reasons is the ability to easily add new content to the website.  BKF does not need to contact us to add new content to their website.  Through a log in to the admin panel they have access to add new images, posts, and pages.  Basically if you can type an email you can add new content to a WordPress website.

WordPress is also a great way to improve SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on your website.  With a couple additions to a WordPress 509 Media can have the major search engines crawling your website each time you post new content to your website.  The more content you add to your site the more can be indexed by search engines like Google.  Content in the form of text is what the search engines look for.  So be sure to add keyword rich content to your website.

The BKF WordPress Theme is a work in process.  As the BKF staff provides us with more images we will add more banner ads to their website and help with areas they are uncomfortable with.  If you are in the market for a new website be sure to Contact 509 Media.  We will be happy to discuss ways we can help market your company.

Blue Torch Fab Website Design (Old Design)

Many of you may know my history with Blue Torch FabWorks, Inc.  I started the company as a dream and worked on branding the company everyday up until I sold the business to Jason.  If you would like to read more about the shop I have a couple articles posted HERE.  I was going through some old pictures the other day and found the following screen shots of the old Blue Torch Fab website design.  I think the site did an effective job projecting the company image and letting people know what Blue Torch Fab was about.  The screen shots pictured are of the front end of the website.  The online shopping cart was driven by Oscommerce / CRE Loaded which was themed with a similar header and graphics.  What you see in the attached pictures was created in Photoshop and sliced for the web.  This version of the website was taken down in favor of WordPress about 6 months ago.

If you have any questions about designing a website or would like a quote for your website be sure to post up or use our CONTACT page for more details.

Google Page Rank and Why Your Business Should Care

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Google just updated Page Rank (PR) for www.509media.com to PR3.  I am stoked about the page rank update.  I started posting info on this site right at 2 months ago and things are going well.  Site traffic is steady and quality back links are building.

The Alexa ranking for 509 Media site dropped again tonight to roughly 2.5 million.  It has been dropping weekly since launching the website.  I am happy with the way things are going.  I hope to have the Alexa rank a lot lower soon.  I will update you all with any major changes.

FYI…. for those who do not know what PR is.  Page Rank is a measuring system google uses to rank your website and how relevant it is to the content on the site.  While Google does not tell the general public how they determine Page Rank one of the key factors is Back Links to your website from related websites.  The higher the Page Rank of the site with your link the better your chances of improving Page Rank.  In other words back links are about quality more than quantity.  If you can create a back link go for.  It does not hurt to have a back link from a PR 0 site.  If you want to create a back link leave a comment on one of the posts here on 509 Media.  In the URL line make sure to put your full web address.  www.YOURSITE.com  Once you post the comment Google is instantly notified with the way I have my site set up as well as many other sites tracking the content on my site.  By tomorrow you may see the back link show up for your site.

Alexa is kind of a measure of how popular your website is compared to others around the world.  If you are serious about making your website turn dollars I would recommend learning about PR, back links, Alexa rank and other SEO goodies.

What does page rank do for you?  Page Rank increases your chances to be found when people search for your products or services.  Other ways for to make sure your website is seen my search engines to have content on the site.  Content does not mean a bunch of pretty pictures.  Content is typed words.  The words you use throughout your website need to be planned out.  These words are called keywords.  Keyword density is enough for a separate discussion.

Some websites and their current Page Ranks:

www.Facebook.com = PR 9 (Alexa rank 2)

www.MySpace.com = PR 9 (Alexa rank 12)

www.davidairey.com = PR 5 (Alexa 25,000)

www.RCcrawler.com/forum = PR 3 (Alexa 175,000)

Anyway, I thought some of you may find this helpful.  If you ever have questions feel free to fire over message.  If you need a hired gun to work on your website marketing let me know.  509 Media has proven experience brand building and gaining international exposure.

Websites that Work… Are you looking for a Designer?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

can moneyCan you afford to be throwing your hard earned dollars in the trash just because you decided to hire the wrong website designer? Do you need a website for your company, church, club, non profit, personal use or other organization?  There are a myriad of choices out there to choose from when trying to decide which web designer to use.  I talk to people all the time who say they are going to let their friend Bobby design their website because he learned how to make a web page at school.  I am not here to discourage you from saving money and having someone close to you help out.  If you decide to go this route you first need to make certain this person understands not only how to design a website but also understands how to market your website.  What good does a website do if people can not find it?  What good does a website do if people leave the site after visiting only one page?  A website in many cases if your first impression on potential clients. You can have a positive or negative effect on the potential client.

509 Media is here to help.  We not only have experience in website design, we also have experience marketing websites on both local and global marketplaces.   If you are looking for the geek squad with glasses and a pocket protector then you have found the wrong place.  If you are looking for someone with proven marketing experience and someone who knows how to help you put dollars in the bank then you have found the right place.  It is not important how the website it built.  Do you really care if the website is written in PHP, HTML, or that the site has its colors and positioned by a CSS page?  Most of you will have not clue what this is or care as long as the site is getting people in and making the cash register ding.

Many website companies boast about how they will optimize your website for search engines and get you listed.  SEO (Search Engine Optimization) should be a key part of the plan from the beginning. SEO should never be an added cost or feature.  Some of these companies have a poor Alexa ranking and very few back links to their website.  Back links are a very important part of getting your website noticed.  The most important thing is back links help your page rank improve.  As your page rank improves your rank in search engine results will be improved.  The added benefit to back links is people do see the links and find their way to your website via the back links.  If you choose 509 Media to design your new website we will spend the necessary time on the phone or in person explaining how you can get better results from your website.  We will be happy to discuss what you need to do once we hand over the new website to get the best possible return on your investment.

If you are in the market for a new website be sure to contact 509 Media in Dothan, Alabama.  We service clients around the world for graphic design and website design projects.  We can also consult with you on other aspects of your marketing plan.  Just let us know what you need.  We have affordable rates to fit just about any budget.

Rockstar Personal Branding

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

“Personal branding isn’t very different than product branding, except that the entity being branded is you. Just like Nike uses its brand to attach a certain personality and uniqueness to the shoes it sells, your personal brand is made up of the qualities and unique traits you relay about yourself. Your personal brand represents the way you want other people to think about you.

Personal branding hinges on perception and the stories you tell about yourself: the things you emphasize and the things you don’t. Does personal branding involve lying? It shouldn’t. More than that, it shouldn’t have to. You don’t need to be a rockstar to build an extraordinary personal brand.” — From Rockstar Personal Branding by Skellie

Some may be wondering why I am posting this on 509 Media.  509 Media is in the business to help people with branding.  Branding a product, person, or service is very important in the market place.  The more known the brand the further your footprint in your given industry will reach.  Personal Branding is much like branding a product.  If people know you and your service the comfort level in doing business with you will be higher.  In the past I worked very hard to build a company brand, but at the same time I was working to build a personal brand.  I wanted people to know if they do business with me I would take care of them.  I wanted them to know I was a knowledgeable resource in my industry.  I wanted them to know if I didn’t have the correct answer I would get it.  Person branding in some ways can be like building trust in the market place.

The Rockstar Personal Branding is a free pdf book.  If you SIGN UP on their site you can download the book for free.

509 Media on Car Domain

I know… Car Domain is filled with people posting vehicles that do not belong to them.  I started a page there for different reasons.  The main reason is Search Engine Optimization for 509 Media or otherwise know as SEO.  By posting on Car Domain it creates a back link.  Back links from high ranking websites are better than back links from low ranking sites.  The more back links you create the better your website will rank with the search engines.  There are many other things to consider when looking at SEO on your site.  This is just one small way to better your chances of being found on the net.

At the time I posted this Car Domain has an Alexa web rank of 4286. By creating a back link here it is a permanent back link unlike Craigslist and eBay where your link is short lived.  On Craigslist your ad is deleted after thirty days.

Just another tip for those looking to better SEO on their website and increase traffic.  If you have any questions or would like help with your website be sure to contact me.

Squidoo A Free Way To Better SEO

Sunday, November 29th, 2009
squidoo

Squidoo

Some may ask, “What is SEO and is important to me?”  If you want to increase traffic and make your website more visible SEO should be very important to you.  The purpose of this post is not to detail all of the ways to pay attention to SEO which is “Search Engine Optimization”.  There are many good articles from leading experts on the subject of SEO on the internet.  Lynda.Com and YouTube both have many good videos on the subject.

One key thing which will improve your page rank is to have back links.  Back links are other sites that have your url listed linking back to your site.  You want to have your back links coming from high ranking sites.  If all of your back links are coming from low ranking sites it does not carry much weight when compared to just a few high ranking sites.  It is better to have large high ranking sites back link to your website.  How do you get back links?  Back links are done with a little work on your part.

Higher ranking sites like FaceBook, Squidoo, Myspace, Large forums, and so on can be good places to start getting back links for free.  I am writing this article about Squidoo.  Squidoo is a website with a Alexa rank around 297 at the time of this post.  Squidoo allows you to set up a “Lens” or a page describing a subject you would like to discuss.  The page can be linked back to your website thus creating a back link.

I set up a page on Squidoo for 509 Media in hopes of improving SEO for the website.  Please visit my 509 Media Squidoo Page.  For more details on Squidoo please visit their website.  It is a free service to use.  They will actually pay you money to post on the site based on traffic you generate.  No, I am not posting this article in hopes that you will visit my Squidoo page.  I am writing to inform others on free ways to better SEO.

If you need help with Search Engine Optimization on your website please contact 509 Media for more details.  Adding your site to Squidoo is not the only thing you should do for SEO.  This is only one small idea to make your site more visible on the net. You should take all of the proper steps to improve your site’s Search Engine Optimization.

If you found this article helpful please comment below and post a link to it somewhere on the net.  See I am trying to get you to help me with back links.

Thanks for reading,

Dan DuBose
