Yummy Jerky Online Beef Jerky Store and WordPress Blog

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

yummyjerky-storeI have been buying beef jerky from Yummy Jerky for a couple years and been very pleased with their service and product quality.  The Jerky Hut brand jerky offered by Yummy Jerky is top notch.  If you like beef jerky you will not be disappointed by Yummy Jerky’s product and customer service.  Jerky Hut brand jerky is not the cheap convenient store type jerky many people associate with.

When Aaron at Yummy Jerky decided to step up to a more powerful online store to market his products he called to see what solutions 509 Media had to offer.  Working with the budget given for the website design project we went with an X-Cart install with a custom theme backed up with a WordPress blog themed to match the online store section of the website.  If you would like to see X-Cart and WordPress working together be sure to check out this web design project.

Let me know how I can help with your next website project.  Contact me HERE.

Website Design for Durden Outdoor

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

billboard-website-designWordPress is a great platform to design custom websites for many different business types. WordPress is just the framework which came be themed to look and function for specific needs. Many people who first hear of WordPress think of it as only a blog. I typically like to think of WordPress as more of a content management system.

The Durden Outdoor WordPress website was custom themed to suit the needs of Durden Outdoor team and their goals. The ease of adding new posts featuring up to date projects keeps their clients and potential clients up to speed with billboard advertising in southeast Alabama. Durden Outdoor is based in Dothan, AL and features billboard locations in 8 counties in the southeast. The new website does not feature each location they have but it will soon feature all digital billboard locations.

The custom theme features custom layouts for certain areas of the website.  This was done to give the user a different feel for the media type as they browse the website.  Be sure to check out the digital billboards section.  This page on the site has a completely different header from the rest of the WordPress theme.

WordPress Theme For Hudlow Axle

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

hudlowaxle_wordpressSteve Hudlow called a couple months ago wanting a custom website built for his company Hudlow Axle.  The website needed to allow them to easily add new content and manage the website from their location.  The 509 Media crew went to work installing WordPress on their server and building a custom WordPress Theme to represent their drive shaft company.  We used the existing image they were using for their company logo and went from there creating a unique WordPress theme.  WordPress is a great platform to build from as it allows the client to easily update and add information to their website.  Of course 509 Media will be here to assist if Hudlow Axle needs help with the site.

Changes to the 509 Media WordPress Website

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

There are major changes going on to the 509 Media website.  The look of the site may be changing, but the platform has remained the same.  509 Media runs on WordPress.  WordPress is a content management system.  WordPress was originally designed to be a blog platform, but many developers have used it to contain and organize large amounts of information.  509 Media choose WordPress for the ability to easily add and maintain content on the website.

We are working to change the look of the site.  The navigation of the site will be changing  as well in hopes to make it easier to find what you are looking for.  WordPress basically runs off of two different types of content.  The first type of content is Pages and the second is Posts.   Pages are static content that remain the same over time.  Pages are things like our Content page.  The Content page holds the contact form and rarely gets updated.  The next area is the reason many of you visit the site on a frequent basis.  Posts are the life of the website.  Posts are new content being added to the site as new things happen.  In 509 Media’s case we use posts for updated projects, how to articles, news, and this article.  A post can be anything you want to add to your website.  WordPress makes this very simple.  Posts can be made from any computer and many smart phones.  I use my iPhone to add new posts from time to time.  I rarely Publish a post from my iPhone.  Most of the time I will start an article while I am thinking about it and save it in WordPress as a draft.  This allows me to take a second look at the post on my computer before making the post.

We will be adding more information and images to the site over the next few days.   We have been working on an online store for the site and hope to have it up and rolling sometime very soon.

If you would like to see us make a certain change to the site please post up below.  Please keep in mind we are in the middle of making some major changes and a few things around here are not dialed in yet.

Your New Website… Now What?

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

It does not matter if 509 Media has designed a new website for your or another company you need to make an active effort to promote your website..  One of the differences 509 Media offers is we educate our clients on what to do with their website after the new website goes live.  To the average person SEO (Search Engine Optimization) sounds like some type of computer web nerd voodoo magic.  Simply put yes there are things that your website designer needs to do to your website when laying out the design to provide the best possible chance of being found.  The design process should incorporate measures to maximize the ability to be indexed by search engines.  Google is and will remain the big kid search engine on the block.  Others like Yahoo, Bing, Ask, and so on need to be addressed as well.  OK, I know you are asking what you can do from your office or home to maximize the chances to have your website found on search engines.

Following are some simple things to do to help SEO of your website.  You should read and educate yourself on these topics but this overview will shed a little insight on the mysterious thing called SEO. Please keep in mind there are MANY more things to consider when discussing SEO.  This list contains things the average person can do with very little effort.

What can you do to help your website be found on the internet? 10 Things you can do to help your website:

  1. Make sure you have relevant content on your website.  I know this is something some website designers will be responsible for, but as the owner of a website you should know to post keyword rich relevant content.  If you have a website built in the form of a content management system you may need to log in and start typing.  Here at 509 Media we design many websites based on WordPress.  WordPress allows the client (site owner) to constantly add content to their website without the need to contact a website designer.  Make sure you are adding content with keywords to drive search engine traffic to your website.  Keywords are specific to your business or service.  In other words on this website keywords include things like, graphic designer, website designer, stickers, banners, and Dothan.  I included Dothan because it is the city in Alabama where 509 Media is located.
  2. Google Page Rank is Google’s means to measure other websites back linking to your website.  Google Page Rank is measured from 0 through 10.  10 is the highest.  Do not be upset if your website does not have a really high page rank.  Facebook is the number 2 most visited website on the net at the time of writing this post.  Facebook has a Google Page Rank 9.  Currently 509 Media has a Google Page Rank 3.  Everyday we look for places to gain back links to 509 Media to improve page rank.  Back links are not only important for page rank but they can also produce traffic from people clicking the links you have on other websites.  Some websites including forums have a little piece of code built into their websites called No Follow or Do Follow.  A No Follow site basically tells spiders from Google and other search engines to not follow the link.  If this is the case you do not get credit for the link. So make sure you are finding Do Follow websites to have your link added. If you would like to read more about Google Page Rank be sure to visit our Page Rank Page here on 509media.com. Comment Below if you would like to know how to tell is a website is a Do Follow site.
  3. The following adds to the above step.  Backlinks are important to get, and should be taken serious by those wanting to build web traffic.  Your new website needs to get as many of them as possible.  Step three is get your website listed on website directories.  Directories are websites like DMOZ and Technorati.  There are many of these directories out there to get your website listed on.  When looking for website directories be sure to look for ones with high Google Page Ranks.  In order to get your page rank going vertical you need to have back links from higher page rank websites. I should mention not all directories are free.  If you would like to learn more about directories be sure to leave a comment below.
  4. Assuming the content you are adding to your website has something to do with your products and/or services it will benefit you to become active on the various social media websites.  Sure when you think of Facebook or Myspace you think of a pimple face teenager kids, but the fact is there are more people on these websites than can be ignored.  Social Media is a great place to interact with your clients and future clients.  It shows that you are a real human and willing to interact and answer questions.  I think one of the biggest things is you will also be in front of people to handle issues if something should go wrong after a purchase is made from your company.  In short it adds a human element to your online presence.  Twitter is another good place to become active.  Every time we post something to Twitter we get people clicking the links and visiting our website.  Social Media is a strong advertising tool and should not be ignored.  After all it is free to use.
  5. Online Forums are just as important as the popular social media websites.  Forums are online communities of like minded people.  Online forums cover topics of everything imaginable.  From sports forums to home improvement forums you can find many to drive traffic back to your website.  In some ways they are social media websites.  I did not mention them in the social media section above because they need to be viewed differently than social media websites.  Online forums can cost money to advertise on.  Depending on the number of people visiting the forum it may generate some revenue for your company.  If you decide to start posting on forums I recommend you getting involved in conversations and offer valuable content to the forum.  Do not be a salesman and spam the forum.  If you see people asking questions about a subject you are educated in be sure to answer the question and let the person know to ask you if they need to know more.  Offer a helping hand, and spend enough time on the forum to learn the ways of doing business on the forum. Each forum is different and the people react differently.  The last thing you want to be known for is a spammer.  Take your time.  Read the forum rules before posting.  If you would like to know more about forums and the proper way to use them for advertising be sure to post a comment below.
  6. Posting on Craigslist.com can be a good thing if done correctly.  I have been posting on Craigslist for a while now.  I have seen some positive results from the effort.  If you decide to post on Craigslist be ready for the endless scam emails.  With a little effort and common sense you can weed through scam emails.  I would recommend using it to advertise locally and direct people into your store or provide a telephone number for people to call.  If you decide to use Craigslist make sure to stick with it for a couple months before deciding if it is generating results.
  7. Post ads on eBay to advertise your products.  eBay rules state that you can not back link to your website if the item is posted for sale on your website.  You can add a back link on eBay if you are linking for additional information.  Learn the rules on eBay and how you can bend them to your benefit.  Don’t break the rules just learn how to use the rules to your benefit.  I view eBay as a source to advertise my product and to get the word out about what I have to offer.  This means of advertising is useful if you have a niche market item.  If you have a mainstream item that many people are offering eBay may not be a cheap place for you to advertise.  If you try this means of advertising you may find more people are calling you to order rather than using the eBay listing.  Ask people where they heard about you to measure if you are being effective with your eBay listing.  The other view of eBay is to actually look at it to sell your item. Many people look to eBay when looking for deal so be ready to sell your item at a bargain price.  Due diligence will determine your sale price so make sure to do your homework.
  8. Post pictures on Flicker and use them on your website.  When posting pictures on Flicker make sure to add the proper information with each picture.  If you post up pictures with just the number your digital camera attached to them you are selling yourself short.  Google and other search engines will only index the pictures by the information you list with the image.  Having proper picture titles and meta descriptions will help your pictures rank better in search engine results.  In order to have a large number of pictures on Flicker you will have to pay for the service.
  9. Video is a powerful thing.  Look at how large You Tube has grown over the years.  Posting product description videos on You Tube can offer another way for your product and/or services to be indexed and found.  We can suggest many different things to post on You Tube, but I think you can use your imagination.  Develop video for “How To” do things related to your products.  Do not stop with You Tube.  You can also use online video websites like Vimeo.  Vimeo allows you to put higher quality and longer videos.
  10. Anytime you add new content to your website, Flicker, You Tube, or other source be sure to post it up on the forums you are posting in, on social media websites, and certainly talk about the new content on your website.  After all the point of all of this is to drive traffic back to your website.  If you are not getting found on the net it will be difficult to convert the website investment into deposits at the bank.

The 10 Things To Do After Going Live with your new website are some of the things you need to do.  There are more things you can do to better your chances of being found.  You can spend money on things like Adwords, but I wanted to keep the subject matter related to things that are free to do or minimal cost.  I will be posting an article on Google Adwords soon.

Be sure to comment if you have questions.

Blue Torch Fab Website Design (Old Design)

btf_old_index

btf_old_contact

Many of you may know my history with Blue Torch FabWorks, Inc.  I started the company as a dream and worked on branding the company everyday up until I sold the business to Jason.  If you would like to read more about the shop I have a couple articles posted HERE.  I was going through some old pictures the other day and found the following screen shots of the old Blue Torch Fab website design.  I think the site did an effective job projecting the company image and letting people know what Blue Torch Fab was about.  The screen shots pictured are of the front end of the website.  The online shopping cart was driven by Oscommerce / CRE Loaded which was themed with a similar header and graphics.  What you see in the attached pictures was created in Photoshop and sliced for the web.  This version of the website was taken down in favor of WordPress about 6 months ago.

If you have any questions about designing a website or would like a quote for your website be sure to post up or use our CONTACT page for more details.

Website Header Design for Frontier 4X4

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

frontier4x4_siteWhile talking to the owner of Frontier 4×4 yesterday about the new logo design we created he asked if we could change out the Header image on their website.  The website design they are using is based from a spliced Photoshop file.  Rather than starting with the psd file provided to 509 Media we choose to take the existing website header and replace the area needed.  Doing this saves design time and money for the client.  In the future we do more work on the site for them as needed.  Check out the header and let us know what you think.

Noticed the dry and cracking mud layer in the back ground.  We then put a green pattern layer on top of the mud and set it to overlay.  There are a few more steps involved getting to this point but for most people this will be enough information. The new Frontier 4×4 Logo was placed on the header and given a grunge effect.  The Toyota rock crawler layer was blended using a layer mask.  Making small changes like this can change the overall look and feel of a website.  If you would like to hire 509 Media as your web designer feel free to contact us anytime for more information.

If you would like to see more information on the Frontier 4×4 Logo Design project you can visit it here, Frontier 4×4 Logo Design.  If you are looking for someone to design a logo for your company be sure to consult with 509 Media.  We can do much more for your company than simply draw a logo.

Website Designer and Increasing Your Speed of Business

Monday, January 4th, 2010

speedofbusiness509509 Media offers web design services to people around the world.  Business owners in Dothan, AL and other small town USA towns should understand the upcoming decade will hold many changes in the way local and regional businesses advertise their products and/or services. Even for small local businesses in towns just like Dothan the first line of contact may be your website.  More and more people are turning to advances in technology to look up telephone numbers, to determine business hours for a store they want to visit, and to look for a local supplier of a certain item.  The internet increases the Speed of Business not only for the consumer but for the business owner as well.  As the Speed of Business increases in speed it is paramount that you stay at the leading edge of your competition.

You may be asking, “What do you mean by the Speed of Business will increase?’ By saying the Speed of Business is increasing and will continue to do so in the upcoming decade is a simple idea.  More and more people are purchasing “Smart Phones” like the new Verizon Droid or the extremely popular Apple iPhone.  A smart phone increases speed of business in a few different ways.  The first thing many business owners in Dothan and other small towns should realize is you should make your business easy to do business with.  People are searching for products and services with smart phones on the internet and the easier your company can be found the more likely you will gain a sale.  If your company does not have an up to date website you could be missing out on increased sales due to increasing Speed of Business.

Speed of Business can manifest itself in other forms.  More and more consumer confidence is rising in regard to making online purchases.  By purchasing online it can save the consumer time and money by not going to the physical location of the business.  Speed of Business here is effected in that people never have to talk to you, they never have to step foot on your place of business.  All the customer has to do is enter some basic information on the internet to order a product.  An online store might not be a perfect fit of some companies, but for many it can open a new revenue stream.  509 Media offers e-commerce solutions to help you sell product online.  We will be happy to educate you on everything needed to begin selling product online.

The last area concerning Speed of Business I would like to cover in this short post has to do with information.  Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace have helped change website design.  In years past a website was a few pages describing your company, products, and services.  The website design was placed on the net and left to direct customers to for additional information.  Well if this is the approach you still have today for your website design you are going to be left behind by other more aggressive businesses.  Today website design is about current up to date information.  A website needs to be updated on a regular basis with new information encouraging visitors to come back and read more.  Older websites (Legacy Websites) are becoming antiquated.  Legacy sites are being replaced by Dynamic Websites which are easy to add and remove information .  Often times the business owner can add information to their website with out the need of a web designer thus saving them money and time.  An example of things to update your website might be the following:  Your company just received a new product.  You should take a couple pictures and have it posted to your website.  With a dynamic website this process could be completed in 5 minutes.

Here is how all of this ties together in a working package.  A potential client turns on their laptop while sitting in front of the tv.  The potential client sees an item on tv they are interested in so they perform a quick search on the net for the item in their local town.  For conversation sake lets say it is my home town Dothan.  The potential client finds a search result of the product you just posted to your website a couple days earlier so they visit your website.  After a couple minutes the potential client decides to order online to make sure they do not miss out on the new item before it sells out.  The potential client opts for a local store pickup when checking out on your website.  The credit card is ran and the order is placed.  The following day you have the order processed and waiting for the potential client to pick up.  When this customer walks into your store for the first time to pick up their item they notice a few other things they can not live without because you have taken the time to optimize floor space in your store to up sale.  Of course if you are shipping the product to the customer you want to make sure you have the website set up for cross selling items to gain the up sale.

Not only does an up to date website open the door to creating sales online it also increases the chance you will be found when a potential client searches the internet.  Google and other search engines index content from your website.  The more information or content you have posted to your website the more the search engines have to crawl and index.  Information is king in the internet world.  It is very easy to maintain a website with up to date information. Is your company and website ready as the Speed Of Business increases?  Do you need a web designer who understands advertising and converting visitors to sales.  After all no business invests money on advertising just to say they have an ad.  You should make sure your website is an asset doing work for you and not just sitting there.

I hope you found this short post interesting.  Please leave a comment below.  I will be adding more informational post on web design, digital printing, advertising, vehicle wraps, and more.  Be sure to check back to 509 Media.

How to add a RSS feed into your HTML website.

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Billboard_Feed_512x512If you are searching for a way to incorporate an RSS Feed into your static HTML website you have a few options.  One of the easiest ways to get your blog posts to show up on your HTML site home page is to use a free service on the net to generate the code for you.  If you are good enough with code to write your own RSS Includes code then you have no reason to read this post.  If you would like a very easy solution you can do an online search for “Add an RSS Feed to a HTML website”.  You will get a number of results that will work for you.  I would like to add you can use this same method to add an RSS feed to other types of websites.  For instance I am adding a feed at the bottom of this page.

If you visit RSS-Info you will find a very simple to use online form to generate the needed code to add an RSS feed to your website.  Here is a link to RSS-Info’s online code generator. LINK TO RSS-Info Please keep in mind RSS-Info’s website is just one example of a an online code generator.  Be sure to search around and find what works best for your need.

While visiting the RSS-Info website if you want to try out the form just enter the web address to your RSS feed.  Here is an example which is a link to the 509 Media Feed Page.  It will generate an example of what the feed will look like on your website at the bottom of the page.  You can make many changes on the online form to better suit your needs.  Be sure to change the number of posts to have in the feed if you do not want 10 of your most recent posts to show.

The same type form can be used to show recent comments on your blog.  If you want a Twitter Feed on your home page you can use the form to add Twitter updates to your website.  If you want to use my Twitter feed to try out on the form here is the link to my Dan DuBose Twitter RSS Feed.

If you found this post helpful please leave a comment below.  Feel free to repost this as long as you back link here to my site.  Thanks for reading.  If you need to hire a web designer feel free to contact 509 Media anytime.

Here is what the code generated will look like on your site.  Of course the information in the feed will be from blog URL you put in the form.  In the example below I used an RSS Feed from the Graphic Design Blog.  I set the form to 500 pixels wide, to show only 2 most recent entries, and changes the colors to suit my needs.
